WEED ABATEMENT

The purpose of the program is to prevent fire hazards created by vegetative growth and the accumulation of combustible debris through voluntary compliance.

Property owners are required to maintain their properties cleared of weeds, grass, vines or other growth that is capable of being ignited and endangering neighboring properties.

Exception : Weed abatement on residential property, less than one-half acre in size may be done by mowing or weed eating. Weeds shall be no more than one (1) inch in height after cutting. All cuttings shall be removed.

During the dry season months May through November District personnel will be conducting inspections throughout the District’s boundaries. If a property is found to be non-compliant a Notice to Abate hazard will be issued to the property owner additional steps will follow until abatement of property is completed.

REPORT A HAZARD

The District will follow up on complaints located within the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County. To report a hazard in the City of Citrus Heights, contact Code Enforcement at 916-725-2845. To report a hazard within the City of Rancho Cordova, contact Code Enforcement at 916-851-8770. 

When leaving a complaint provide your name, phone number and address of the property you are reporting, if you would like a return call state so in your message.

CREATE A FIREBREAK

A clear firebreak of a minimum 30-foot width shall be created and maintained in all areas designated by the Fire District. Clear firebreaks shall be provided and maintained around all buildings and combustible fences, areas containing vehicles, near structures, or near storage located on a parcel or on adjacent properties.

The firebreak shall be made using one of the following methods:

Discing: The discs shall be set at an angle sufficient to cut the sod loose and adequately bury the growth of weeds, grass or other vegetation. Discing shall include roto-tilling or cultivating.

Scraping: The blade shall be set at an angle sufficient to cut the growth of weeds, grass or other vegetation down to bare ground.

Mowing: Dead weeds shall not exceed two (2) inches in height at the completion of the mowing. It shall be done each time the dead growth exceeds six (6) inches in height. Combustible material produced by mowing shall be removed from the property
